Why you shouldn’t get an online will
Online wills cover the bare bones for your estate plan. They typically are hosted on national websites where you can download them for a cheap price.
The problem is that these wills avoid state specific laws. There are many considerations that an experienced estate planning lawyer would know that aren’t included in an online will.
For these reasons it can be dangerous to download an online will without consulting an attorney.
For example, an online will doesn’t inform you about the laws of medicaid estate recovery, welfare recovery, or prison recovery. An online will doesn’t delve into the laws of spousal election, the spousal share, or what happens if you were recently divorced. Special needs considerations, living wills, trusts, pet trusts, and pour over wills and powers of attorneys are not considered in online wills. These are important considerations to know with many nuances you don’t want to miss.
For that reason it’s best to consult an estate planning attorney.
