State Senator Saud Anwar (D) Faces Backlash for Social Post Wishing Trump Dead as Arrests Rise Over Protest Threats

Connecticut State Senator Saud Anwar (D) is under fire after holding up a sign at the Hartford no kings protest that appeared to suggest he hopes Trump has a heart attack and dies. Anwar posted the picture to his social media account.

Anwar, born in 1967, is an American physician and Democratic state senator representing Connecticut’s 3rd District, which covers East Hartford, South Windsor, East Windsor, and Ellington.

Before joining the State Senate, he twice served as mayor of South Windsor, from 2013 to 2015 and again from 2017 to 2019.

A pulmonary specialist by profession, Anwar earned his medical degree from Aga Khan University and later studied at Yale University. He is also a father of two. In the legislature, he serves as deputy president pro tempore of the Senate, co-chairs the Public Health Committee with Representative Cristin McCarthy Vahey, and holds additional roles as vice chair of the Insurance and Real Estate Committee, as well as a member of the Appropriations, Housing, and Human Services committees.

As Trump’s administration continues cracking down on protesters, Anwar might have reason to be cautious. It wouldn’t be surprising if Trump’s Justice Department tried to interpret his actions as a threat against a public official — they’ve already shown a willingness to stretch the law that far. A woman in Malden was recently arrested under similarly shaky circumstances.
