Pedestrian Critically Injured in Meriden Hit-and-Run on Broad Street

MERIDEN, Conn. — December 13, 2025
Emergency crews responded Saturday night to a serious hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian on North Broad Street (US-5) in Meriden. The incident occurred near the intersection of Broad Street and Atkins Street, leaving one person with life-threatening injuries.
Timeline of Events
According to police and emergency officials, the crash happened at approximately 7:10 p.m. Officers arriving on scene reportedly found the victim lying in the roadway after being struck by a vehicle.
By 7:20 p.m., emergency medical services confirmed the victim was in traumatic arrest, prompting crews to initiate a full trauma code at the scene. The injuries were described as life-threatening.
Driver Fled the Scene
Witnesses told police that the vehicle involved left the scene immediately after the collision, making this an active hit-and-run investigation. As of Saturday night, authorities said the identities of both the victim and the driver remain unknown.
“No further details were released at this time,” Meriden police said, noting that the investigation is ongoing.
Road Closures and Traffic Impact
Due to the severity of the incident and the investigation, North Broad Street (US-5) was closed in both directions for several hours.
Closures extended between:
- Atkins Street and Westfield Road, and
- Later confirmed between Atkins Street and Britannia Street
Drivers were advised to seek alternate routes while emergency crews worked the scene and police conducted their investigation.
Connecticut’s Rising Hit-and-Run Trend
This crash reflects a broader and growing problem across Connecticut. The state records thousands of hit-and-run crashes each year, with more than 12,000 reported in 2022 alone. Those incidents resulted in 17 fatalities, highlighting a troubling upward trend—particularly for pedestrians, who remain among the most vulnerable road users.
Data also shows that younger drivers between the ages of 16 and 24, as well as males, are disproportionately represented in hit-and-run crashes. The UConn Crash Data Repository provides detailed statewide data that allows researchers and policymakers to analyze patterns by location, age, and crash type.
Fatalities Continue to Increase Nationwide
The issue extends beyond Connecticut. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, hit-and-run fatalities have increased by an average of 7.2% per year since 2009. Urban areas have seen particularly high activity, with Connecticut cities such as New Haven, Hartford, and Bridgeport reporting elevated numbers compared to surrounding regions.
Understanding Uninsured Motorist Coverage in Hit-and-Run Crashes
When a driver flees the scene and cannot be identified, victims often worry about how medical bills and lost income will be covered. In Connecticut, uninsured motorist (UM) coverage plays a critical role in these situations.
Uninsured motorist coverage is designed to protect people injured by drivers who either have no insurance or cannot be located, which includes most hit-and-run crashes. If a pedestrian or vehicle occupant is struck and the driver disappears, UM coverage can help pay for:
- Medical expenses
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
- Long-term rehabilitation costs
In many cases, UM coverage applies even when the injured person was not inside a vehicle, such as pedestrians or cyclists. Coverage limits and requirements vary by policy, but Connecticut law requires drivers to carry uninsured motorist coverage, making it one of the most important protections available in hit-and-run cases.
Ongoing Investigation
The Connecticut Department of Transportation confirmed the crash, and Meriden police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including efforts to identify the vehicle and driver involved.
Anyone with information related to this crash is encouraged to contact Meriden Police as authorities continue their investigation.
